Summer Fellowship Program for Research Grant Writing
To support external research grant proposal submissions or revisions for reapplication, the Office of Research and Health Sciences plans to award Summer Research Fellowships to A&M-SA faculty members.
Eligibility criteria:
- Faculty must be on full-time tenured or tenure-track appointments and are to apply to receive funding (from the targeted grant agency/research program) as PI.
Application Deadline: May 5th, 2025.
Documentation Required to Apply
- Application narrative. The narrative must not exceed three double-spaced pages with margins no less than 1 inch. Any references cited are not counted toward the three-page limit.
- Current biosketch. The biosketch (in NSF format) should be no more than four pages and should focus on the research record, including publications, conference presentations, grants and research relevant awards. Works in press may be included if clearly marked as such.
- Relevant Request for Proposals (RFP) or Request for Applications (RFA) – include website location for direct review.
Application Review Criteria to Consider
- Significance of the proposed work;
- Adequacy of the design and methodology;
- Description of the data analysis, and timeline;
- The clarity of the proposal, including its organization and prose;
- Probability of successful completion of the proposed project during the period of funding; and
- The relationship of the proposed project to other external grant funding, including future proposals and/or previous or existing funding.
Applicant Review Measures
- Prior Award History: Any internal funding history. List all awarded and not awarded.
- External Funding history (if any), included funding status (list awarded and not awarded).
- Relevance of research to the field and to A&M-SA.
- Does the project include student involvement?
Measures upon Receipt - During the Summer Fellowship
- Draft proposal and budget ready for external grant submission—regardless of deadline by August 31, 2025.
- Proposal submitted to sponsor appropriately and timely through A&M-SA Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP)/ SRS.
- A quality draft proposal as judged by the Office of Research is required to release the Summer Fellowship Program award amount.
Other Requirements
If the external grant proposal is not funded, faculty awardees are:
- Required to reapply.
- Required to share reviewer comments with the OSP.
- Work with OSP/Hanover to strengthen proposal for reapplication.
Summer Research Fellowship applications should be submitted via email to Dr. Davida Smyth at rhs@tamusa.edu by May 5th, 2025. A committee to review and rank-order applications will be appointed by the Office of Research and Health Sciences. Criteria to be used by the review committee will include those listed above. The number of awards will be determined by the availability of funds. This fellowship would leave two months in the summer for grant funded assignments or summer teaching assignments. The amount of the Summer Fellowship Program Award will be $5000.
